How to make a staircase ?

A tuto, step by step, available to all !

Here is an exercise, harmless in the surface for ordinary people… Until the moment we take action, when we notice that our building tilts or our steps are never of the same height !… Technical textbooks are often too complex, elitist or poorly didactic… Then, we are just going to try to make simple and effective!

A FEW TRICKS TO BE KNOWN:

1- THE SKYLINE:

It is the major mark to realize characters and decoration of your drawing and thus our staircase… Roughly, it is the imaginary line that gets lost far away, on the horizon. Démo: If you look straight ahead, the horizon is going to position quite naturally in the middle of the image. It is here represented in red ↓

If you look up, from the bottom, the horizon is going to move logically  downward the l’image ↓

Conversely, if you look down, from above, it is going to move upward the l’image ↓

But why is it essential to place the horizon line?

2- THE VANISHING POINTS:

… Because it is from this imaginary line that we are going to be able to build our elements in perspective, thanks to the Vanishing Points that are always situated on the horizon !

MAKING OF THE STAIRCASE:

1- GROUND PLANE:

2- CHOOSING THE NUMBER OF STEPS:

Let’s say 8 steps that we realize on the cutting edge of the rectangle.

We connect the indents to the vanishing points relative to our perspective.

3- CHOOSING THE INCLINATION OF THE SLOPE:

Draw a vertical line passing through our vanishing point (fig A). Fixing a point of slope, more or less high according to the wished degree of slope, and connect it to the foot of the first step of our staircase(fig B ou C).

4- FROM DREAM TO REALITY:

Draw a second line to the top of the first step and connecting de 2 extremities of these 2 blue lines.(fig 1.) We just have to join the intersection points of our blue lines with the vanishing lines (fig 2, 3) ↓

Now that we have the left side of our staircase, let’s link each step to the second vanishing point.

And to close the staircase, same deal !.. We take the same point of slope that we still throw to our first two steps (remember, our blue lines !).. Then, we make the link with the new vanishing lines to get the right side of our staircase (black lines)

We just have to redraw our lines, rather freehand because little imperfections will give to your staircase a very realistic effect !
